Bosman Family Vineyards has been operational since 2007. It belongs to the Bosman family of Wellington that have been custodians of their land for 8 generations. The family have always been involved in vineyards and wine since their ancestor Hermanus Bosman came to South Africa in 1707 as a "sieketrooster" (caregiver) of the Drakenstein Community on behalf of the Dutch Eats India Company. Developing communities have always been part of the Bosman family phylosophy and even today, this is an aspect of their business that is very important to them. 1957 was the last year that wine was made on their farm Lelienfontein as a decision was made to focus their efforts on their vine nursery, Leinfontein Vine Growers. They have been grafting vines since 1888 at Lelienfontein and today their vine nursery is deemed to be one of the most succesful nurseries in the Southern Hemisphere. They graft close to 50 different wine grape varieties and have these varieties growing in their vineyard garden at De Bos, their farm in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hermanus. When current MD, Petrus Bosman, came back to the farm after university and harvests in California, he realised that many of the award-winning wineries of the South African wine industry were buying grapes from their vineyards and making wines from them that walk away with all the accolades. He felt driven to follow in his grandfather's footsteps and to get back into the wine industry after 50 years of no wine-making on the estate. He made a 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon at a neighbouring friend's cellar and show it to the family. The rest is history. In 2007 re-opened the newly renovated 250 year old family wine cellar with the aim to make truly inspirational and intriguing wines from the top 5% of their harvest. It was also the first time in their history that a bottle of wine was bottled with their name on the label and the challenge to start building their brand had just begun. • Ownership/ winemaker OWNERSHIP: BOSMAN FAMILY TRUST AND ADAMA APPOLO WORKERS TRUST The name ADAMA holds special meaning for many of the families farming with the Bosman family as Adama Appollis (nicknamed "Adama") is a forefather to many of these family members. 2008 saw the culmination of a dream when 260 farm workers received a 30% share in the entire business and all related brands. The model is based on a partnership with everybody sharing in everything and everybody having access to market and skills transfer. It involves 430 hectares of prime vineyard land and is the largest land reform transaction to date in the South African wine history. WINE MAKER: CORLEA FOURIE Winemaker at Bosman Family Vineyards A girl from Bloemfontein in the Free State of South Africa who was enchanted by her parents love for the Cape. After working abroad in hospitality made the connection between wine, working with people and doing it in the most beautiful environment. Corlea has been involved with small boutique producers since 2004 and enjoys the hands-on involvement that her work entails. She has a bachelors degree in Science with Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Stellenbosch, but in the grand scheme of things, Corlea admits, "will always be learning everyday." She has been nominated as female winemaker of the year in 2008 & 2009 and made the IWC Fairtrade Trophy winner in 2012, the Best Fairtrade White Wine in South Africa (Michelangelo International Wine Awards) in 2011 and the Best Cape Blend in South Africa (Perold ABSA Cape Blend Competition) in 2012.Läs mer
